I have over 25 years of experience in the fitness and wellness industries. From teaching group fitness, working as a NASM personal trainer, a spinning instructor to teaching yoga as a Yoga Alliance instructor- I have seen, and experienced, all of the fitness and wellness fads and faux pas.
I also trained for half marathons as a 20 year old, as a pregnant 30-something and almost matched my PR as a 45 year old mother of three. Throughout these combined experiences, I have met, trained and befriended numerous women who seem to hit their fitness and wellness “wall” once they hit their 40s. When I discovered the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy I immediately registered for their course- knowing that with that credential I would be able to work specifically with Functional Medicine patients as they conquer the hurdles they encounter as they age.
I always share that I am also a Functional Medicine patient and a dedicated student to the book of “life.” Once I discovered Functional Medicine- roughly 8 years ago- I dug deep into learning more about nutrition, supplements, sleep, exercise and mental health and am one of Functional Medicine’s biggest advocates.
Most patients are referred to me so that I can assist them on their diets. They typically leave their initial Functional Medicine Practitioner appointment being told they need to reset their guts and to avoid: gluten, alcohol, sugar, dairy, peanuts, eggs, corn and soy- and their heads start to spin. I work to start them on a one to three month detox plan followed by a IFM nutrition plan - using the Anti Candida, Cardiometabolic, Detox, or Mitochondrial models.
In addition I inquire about their fitness routines and sleep hygiene. If someone has trouble or questions regarding when to take their supplements and HOW to make sure they actually get all of their supplements in- I have many tried and tested strategies I suggest. Finally, I always make certain to use positive psychology to play to their strengths, to confirm that this is a new lifestyle and it is a journey- not a destination- and to be their cheerleader because I am quite aware that choosing these practices can make you feel as through you are a fish swimming upstream!
I am here to be an extension of the Practitioner. I cannot stress enough that I am not a doctor, not a nutritionist and not a dietitian- but with my certification I am able to work with practitioners to utilize my knowledge and experience to coach patients through their Functional Medicine journey.
I am able to take what is prescribed and translate “what it means” to the patient. I encourage the patients to be their own advocates and offer resources for them to educate themselves. I want the patients, my clients, to feel empowered to make the best health choices in their daily lives and ultimately to live their most vibrant lives throughout their lifespan.
